Roman ruins of Julioa24

A vestige of the past in the new village of Luz ...

Next to the museum, the water plan and the Monte dos Pássaros, it is now possible to visit the Roman ruins Julioa24.

A single-family farm from the 1st/2nd century AD that will have functioned for three generations, this small Roman farm was identified and excavated during the Archaeological and Heritage Survey of Alqueva.
Despite its simplicity, Julio 24 was not excluded from the commercial circuits of the time. In the excavation were found ceramics of the Iberian Plateau and of the North of Africa, as well as coins minted in the times of Tiberius, Trajan and Hadrian. These artifacts are preserved in the Museu da Luz.
The Alentejo's montes - like the nearby Monte dos Pássaros - are a contemporary testimony to the architectural and functional heritage of small agricultural family units of the Roman age, such as Julioa24.
